Overview

Run by the book

SuperMini Challenge Inc is a Motorsport Australia–affiliated, Queensland-incorporated non-profit club that began in 2022. Every round is run under the Motorsport Australia National Competition Rules and the RACERS guidelines, alongside the SMC's own sporting and technical regulations for the Cooper and Unlimited classes.

The rules are written for club-level racing for the purpose of fun — a balanced, equitable series for the drivers and cars competing in it. Where the rules don't say you can do something, you can't, and the Management Committee has final say.

Technical

The two classes

All competitors race in one of two classes. Control RubberCraft Racing tyres are mandatory in both.

Cooper Class

The entry-level class, built around the BMW R50 & R53 Mini Cooper / Cooper S (2001–2006). Cars stay largely OEM, with a defined list of permitted modifications.

  • Control LINK G4X plug-in ECU, firmware set by the category manager each event
  • 7,000 rpm limit, with a success-penalty / handicap RPM system to keep racing close
  • 98-octane pump fuel only — no E85, ethanol blends or additives
  • Minimum weight approx. 1,200 kg with driver (1,080 kg without)
  • Control tyre: RubberCraft SP-01R 225/45-R17

Unlimited Class

The open class, based on Motorsport Australia Group 3D Sport Sedan regulations with SMC amendments — for faster, more developed Minis.

  • Must remain front-wheel drive, with a BMC or BMW Mini engine block
  • No minimum-weight rule enforced; aftermarket internals and gearbox free
  • Max rim 17" × 9"; maximum overall track width 1,875 mm
  • Control tyres: RubberCraft RC001 (220/620-R17 & 240/610-R17)

Mandatory equipment

Safety & presentation

In-car camera

A forward-facing video camera recording to SD card is mandatory in every car. Footage must be supplied on request — no video means no protest rights.

Driver safety gear

An FIA-approved frontal head restraint (HANS) is required at all times on track, along with window nets per the MA technical manual.

Livery

The SMC windscreen banner and current sponsor decals are compulsory on every car, even those with full livery.

Membership levels

Current membership is required to compete. Track entry fees are paid directly to the host venue, on top of these.

On track

Driving standards & penalties

SMC races under the RACERS driving guidelines, with a Driving Standards Officer (DSO) appointed for each event. The aim is close racing with absolutely minimal contact — no driver may gain an advantage through car-to-car contact, and any unfair advantage must be handed back within one lap.

Not tolerated: blocking or weaving, crowding an overtaking car, late dives that cause contact, "bump and run," and running beyond the white track-edge lines.

Typical penalties: 30 seconds added to race time or a pit-lane drive-through; a 10-place grid penalty for code-of-conduct breaches in qualifying or for frivolous protests; and exclusion (up to three further events) for careless or dangerous driving. One warning is allowed per competitor per meeting. Rolling starts at approximately 80 km/h are the standard format.

Championship

Points & champions

Points are awarded to all finishers in each class (1st = 500, scaling down a full table), with 6 bonus points each for pole position and fastest lap. Round winners are declared in each class at every round.

Class champions are crowned in both Cooper and Unlimited, plus an Overall Champion across the combined field. A competitor's best 5 of 6 rounds count toward the class championship — the worst round is dropped — while the outright tally counts all six rounds, rewarding attendance and reliability.

No points are awarded for a DNF (you must complete 75% of race distance and take the chequered flag). Ties are split by number of wins, then seconds, then thirds, then qualifying.

Parity

Keeping it close

To keep Cooper Class racing tight, the club applies parity measures — RPM reductions (in 500 rpm steps) and/or added weight — aiming to keep the top five within about one second per lap. To reduce "breakouts," lap timers and predictive timing are forbidden during racing, though basic timers may be permitted in qualifying with approval.
